Dr. Merrick responds to a call from Katie Barnwell saying that her father is not feeling well, but Katie's big sister Meg insists that everything is OK and that there is no cause for alarm. But Dr. Merrick discovers that everything is far from OK when she finds the father dead in his bed and Meg trying to cope for herself and her two younger siblings in an attempt to keep the family together. Now it is up to the child welfare and they want to separate the children. Oscar Blaketon's attempt to prevent this is hampered by Robert Barnwell who is caught stealing some food. Robert is also the suspect in a number of break-ins in the village. Vernon Scripps has not been discouraged by the loss of his big fortune and a caravan site is a good a way as any to start a new one. Anti-German sentiment is running high with horrific tales of atrocities on the battlefield. Mr. Hudson isn't helping matters much repeating many of the rumors and outright lies being printed in the gutter press and setting the staff on edge. The sinking of the Lusitania leads to outrage in many quarters with mobs attacking businesses with German sounding names and anyone who has a hint of German about him. Hudson lies about his age and tries to enlist but fails the medical exam leading him to join the Specials Constables, auxiliary police who patrol the street and stand guard at power plants and the like. It all becomes more personalized for the servants when the Schoenfeld family, their usual baker, are forced out of their home and the bakery set alight. Hudson proves to be unsympathetic and Hazel takes him to task. As the miners' strike is dominates all political life across the country, Mary has become Leader of Newcastle City Council and is actively supporting the miners, but her son Anthony finds himself on the frontline of the conflict having become a policeman. Twenty-year-old Nicky Hutchinson returns to Newcastle in 1964 after several months working in the southern United States, where he participated in the emerging Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans.
